The De Beauvoir Gardeners club celebrated its 45th birthday in 2023 so it feels appropriate to try to get our archive in some kind of order. At Blooms, Bakes and Barks this year I noticed all of the names engraved around the Rose Bowl and thought it would be nice to make a list of the winners for the website. In fact it was Nancy Turnbull who patiently transcribed them for us.

You might recognise some of your neighbours in the listings – which make fascinating reading. Our honorary member, Joan Miller, won the Rose Bowl six times with her husband Stan and Nancy Korman won the Silver Tankard a whopping seven times .

The Rose Bowl

The de Beauvoir Rose Bowl (centre) was presented to the De Beauvoir Association by Mr and Mrs Benyon – so reads the inscription on the bowl itself. It was first awarded in 1979, just a year after the landscape gardener, Jude Moraes, started the de Beauvoir Gardening club. Today it is presented to the person with most points in the growing categories at the show – but it is not clear what the criteria was historically and I am going to make it my mission to find out.
